On Wednesday 5th June we visited Gibside. When we arrived we found the map and decided to take the yellow path and entered the beautiful grounds that have been preserved for our visits. We first found the Orangery, which would have been home to a brilliant and diverse collection of unusual plants. We then found the ruins of Gibside Hall, which is where the Bowes family lived. The next stop was George’s Column of Liberty. When George Bowes inherited Gibside, he commissioned a 141ft high tower on his newly landscaped grounds.

We then stumbled upon a Canadian Redwood tree which was planted in the 18th century! We then passed the stables, which still had some horse equipment dotted about. Along the way, we saw cows and sheep in the fields, while the farmer’s sheep dogs rounded them all up in the middle. Our next stop was building dens out of large twigs and sticks that had fallen from the trees. The last stop was the park at the end of our walk.

We had the best day!
