Engage:

Pupils in the engage pathway are introduced to outdoor learning, through the strands, understanding of the world, literacy and science. These cross-curricular links are made through using stories as a focus and exploring the outdoors through the setting of the story and encouraging pupils to become free thinkers. In addition, outdoor learning creates an additional scope of progress in the area of science, where pupils can explore natural materials, animal habitats, the weather and basic features of the environment.

Explore:

Pupils in the explore pathway are at the stage where they can use the forest school curriculum to develop confidence within the outdoors. Pupils use these sessions to explore interesting items and areas when prompted by an adult and will use their observations to elaborate on what they enjoyed about their explorations. In addition, pupils can show their enjoyment and preference for a specific activity when out in natural surroundings and through these sessions, see signs of improving confidence within themselves.

Discover:

The forest school sessions are aimed for pupils within the discover pathway to work collaboratively with their peers using opportunities surrounding problem solving games, scavenger hunts, orienteering and creative activities. We encourage pupils at this level to engage in free play exploration, following the pupil’s interest to see how adventurous they are and what engages them in the woodland setting. During these sessions, we use the outdoors to develop relationships with adults and peers and make cross-curricular links where necessary, such as art and design, science and other areas of the curriculum.
