At Harry Watts Academy, our Physical Education curriculum is designed to ensure that every pupil can access a broad range of high‑quality opportunities that develop and refine their physical skills, confidence, and enjoyment of movement. Our approach is rooted in providing a curriculum that is broad, balanced and engaging, enabling all learners to experience success and progress at their own pace.

Building on the foundations established within the Engage and Explore pathways, our PE curriculum deepens pupils’ physical development through a rich program of activities. Students participate in a wide variety of sports, including football, tag rugby, badminton, basketball, handball, volleyball, rounders, cricket, tennis and athletics. These experiences allow pupils to develop as performers, leaders and officials, promoting responsibility, teamwork and independence.

Alongside the development of fundamental movement skills, our curriculum places strong emphasis on physical coordination, balance and object‑control skills. We recognise that participation in physical activity plays a vital role in supporting pupils’ wider personal development. Through sport, pupils build confidence, self‑esteem, and essential social skills such as turn‑taking, sharing, cooperation, communication and positive interaction with others.

Daily opportunities for physical activity—both indoors and outdoors—enhance and enrich the curriculum. These experiences help pupils embed healthy habits, regulate their emotions and develop a positive relationship with physical activity.

As students progress into Key Stage 4, they have the opportunity to work towards the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. This nationally recognised qualification enables learners to develop essential life skills, including resilience, teamwork, problem‑solving and independence, preparing them for adulthood and future pathways.
